Construction skill shortages, how can we combat this?

It is forecast that an extra 251,500 construction workers will be needed by 2028 to meet the expected levels of work.

But what can construction employers do?

  1. Retention Strategies - Companies need to stop workers from leaving by offering them attractive company benefits, wellbeing polices and remuneration packages.

  2. Engage with a younger generation - Employers can attract a younger audience by offering them work flexibility, part time hours, job sharing and a better work life balance.

  3. Challenge negative perceptions - Currently 69% of adults would not consider a construction career as they see it as stressful, unsafe and dirty.

  4. Quicker recruitment perceptions - Reduce the recruitment process in half by having a swift interview schedule and prioritise onboarding.

  5. Strategic recruitment - by only using specialist construction recruitment agencies.
